Ayara Hall, Jim Thompson HouseAs the concluding event in The Breathing of Maps project which has been presented in Yamaguchi and Tokyo, Japan and in Chiang Mai, this symposium will feature reflections by curators Kumiko Idaka and Mark Teh, and a talk on mapping, power and the geo-body by eminent historian Thongchai Winichakul – whose groundbreaking book Siam Mapped(1994) served as a conceptual compass for the project, alongside Japanese folklorist Tsuneichi Miyamoto (1907-1981)’s The Forgotten Japanese: Encounters with Rural Life and Folklore (2010).
In the final part of the symposium, Thongchai, Kumiko and Mark will be joined by Jakarta-based artists Irwan Ahmett and Tita Salina to discuss the issues of traumatic and inconvenient histories across Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand, and its relationship to ‘the unforgetting’. The unforgetting is a term coined by Thongchai in his forthcoming book – as an inability to rememberor to forget. Suspended in this liminal state, these are experiences that have to be repressed or suppressed because they do not cohere to articulating socially meaningful memories under existing regimes of truth.

Thongchai Winichakul is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His book Siam Mapped: A History of the Geo-Body of a Nation (1994) was awarded the Harry J Benda Prize from the Association for Asian Studies in 1995, and the Grand Prize from the Asian Affairs Research Council (Japan) in 2004. Thongchai is an intellectual historian, interested in the intellectual foundation of modern Siam, as the process of the various encounters between the indigenous and the modern forms of knowledge in the mid- 19th to early 20th century. Currently he is exploring the transformation to the modern rule of law in Siam. His forthcoming book, Moments of Silence: The Unforgetting of the October 6 Massacre in Bangkok, will be published in March 2020.Irwan Ahmett and Tita Salina are Jakarta-based artists. Their initial works focused on the issue of urban public space. As vagabond cosmopolitans they have participated in residency programs in Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Taiwan, the Netherlands and Poland. They utilize their high mobility as the primary vehicle in their art practice. Their long-term project reflects the geopolitical clashes in the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Rim, which has encouraged their works to be connected with more complex issues relating to humanity, injustice and ecology.
Born in 1982, Kumiko Idaka is an independent curator based in Aichi, Japan. She was a curator at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM] from 2012 to 2019. Her notable exhibitions include The Story of Japanese Textiles (HOSOO Gallery, Kyoto, 2019), The Breathing of Maps (2018), Fabrics as Demiurges (2017), Moon Kyungwon + YCAM: Promise Park — Rendering of Future Patterns (2015), and Media/Art Kitchen Yamaguchi: Open Call Laboratory — An Exploration into Social Anthropology in Asia (2014). She is currently working in the field of textiles, researching its history in relation to Japanese cultures from a media technology perspective.
Mark Teh is a performance maker and researcher based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His diverse, collaborative projects address the issues of history, memory, counter-mappings, and urban contexts – often taking on documentary and speculative forms. His practice is situated in performance, but also operates via exhibitions, education, writing, and curating. His projects have recently been presented at Salihara Jakarta (2019), Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM] (2019), TPAM Yokohama (2019), BIPAM Bangkok (2018), Fast Forward Festival, Athens (2018), MMCA Seoul (2018), Haus de Kulturen der Welt Berlin (2017) and Bangkok Arts & Culture Centre (2017), amongst others. Mark is a member of Five Arts Centre, a collective of interdisciplinary artists, producers and activists in Malaysia.
