การบรรยาย หัวข้อ ภาพ, อุปลักษณ์, ตัวบท: การเข้าถึงศิลปะร่วมสมัย จัดในวันที่ 24 มิถุนายน 2559 เวลา 14.00 – 16.00 น. ณ ห้องไอยรา ซอยเกษมสันต์ 2 ถนนพระราม 1 เขตปทุมวัน (รถไฟฟ้าบีทีเอส สถานีสนามกีฬาแห่งชาติ)

หอศิลป์บ้านจิม ทอมป์สันภูมิใจนำเสนอการบรรยายในหัวข้อ ภาพ, อุปลักษณ์, ตัวบท: การเข้าถึงศิลปะร่วมสมัย จากอุษาคเนย์  โดยพาเมลา เอ็น. คอเรย์

วันที่ 24 มิถุนายน 2559 เวลา 14.00 – 16.00 น. ณ ห้องไอยรา ซอยเกษมสันต์ 2 ถนนพระราม 1 เขตปทุมวัน (รถไฟฟ้าบีทีเอส สถานีสนามกีฬาแห่งชาติ) ไม่มีค่าใช้จ่ายในการเข้าฟังบรรยาย

แม้ว่านิทรรศการจะเป็นส่วนสำคัญในการประกอบสร้างเรื่องเล่าเกี่ยวกับ “ศิลปะร่วมสมัยของอุษาคเนย์” แต่ในขณะเดียวกันมันยังก่อให้เกิดปัญหาในการรวมตัวกันของภูมิภาคนี้ เพราะแต่เดิมประเทศต่าง ๆ ในแถบนี้ถูกมองว่าเป็นผู้ขับเคลื่อนพัฒนาการด้านศิลปะเมื่อพิจารณาจากประวัติของนิทรรศการ  บทบาทและสถานะของประเทศต่าง ๆ เช่นเวียดนาม กัมพูชา ลาวและพม่ายังคลุมเครือ และบ่อยครั้งจะถูกแยกออกมาจากพัฒนาการในระดับภูมิภาคซึ่งเป็นภาพรวมที่กว้างขึ้น ทำให้ดูเหมือนเป็นวงโคจรอิสระ  การบรรยายนี้เป็นการนำเสนอแนวคิดทางเลือกระดับภูมิภาค ซึ่งแบ่งเป็นสองส่วน  ส่วนที่หนึ่งจะเป็นเนื้อหาที่ได้มาจากบทความของเธอเรื่อง  อุปลักษณ์เป็นดั่งวิธีการ: การจัดแสดงนิทรรศการในลักษณะภูมิภาคนิยม ในภาคผืนแผ่นดินอุษาคเนย์  เป็นการนำเสนออุปลักษณ์ ด้านภูมิ-ประวัติศาสตร์ เช่น แม่น้ำโขง และ เส้นทางโฮจิมินห์ (Ho Chi Minh Trail) แสดงให้เห็นว่าถูกนำมาใช้เปรียบเทียบอย่างไร  บ่อยครั้งที่ต้องประสบปัญหาในการคิดหาเหตุผลสำหรับภัณฑารักษ์ในการสร้างความเชื่อมโยงด้านวัฒนธรรมระหว่างพรมแดน  ส่วนที่สองจะเกี่ยวกับมิติต่าง ๆ ทั้งที่เป็นทางการ แนวคิดของภาพ และตัวบทในผลงานศิลปะร่วมสมัย เพื่อนำมาพิจารณาว่า “การอ่าน”เชิงวัตถุจะทำให้เกิดการคิดในรูปแบบอื่นเกี่ยวกับความเป็นร่วมสมัยในภูมิภาคนี้ได้อย่างไร

เกี่ยวกับผู้บรรยาย
พาเมลา เหงียน คอเรย์ เป็นนักประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะสมัยและร่วมสมัย มีความเชี่ยวชาญเป็นพิเศษเรื่องศิลปะร่วมสมัยในอุษาคเนย์  ในปี 2558 เธอจบการศึกษาระดับปริญญาเอก (ประวัติศาสตร์ศิลป์) จากมหาวิทยาลัยคอร์แนล และต่อมาได้รับตำแหน่งเป็น อาจารย์สอนศิลปะของอุษาคเนย์ ที่ โซแอซ (SOAS) มหาวิทยาลัยลอนดอน  ขณะนี้เธอกำลังเขียนหนังสือเกี่ยวกับความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างศิลปะร่วมสมัยและรูปแบบความเป็นเมืองในเวียดนามและกัมพูชา ซึ่งสืบเนื่องมาจากวิทยานิพนธ์ระดับปริญญาเอกของเธอที่ได้ทุนสนับสนุนงานวิจัยจากมูลนิธิฟูลไบรท์-เฮยซ์ (Fulbright-Hays) และศูนย์ศึกษาเขมร (Center of Khmer Studies)  เธอได้ร่วมจัดการประชุมสัมมนาระดับนานาชาติที่พิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะ เฮอร์เบิร์ต เอฟ จอนห์สัน (Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art) (เซรามิคของเวียดนาม: วัตถุที่สี่แยก, 2558) และที่ พิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะสมัยใหม่ โมมา (MoMA) (ศิลปะร่วมสมัยในกัมพูชา: การสืบค้นทางประวัติศาสตร์, 2556)  งานเขียนของเธอได้รับการตีพิมพ์ในวารสารArt Journal, Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art,Udaya, และ Journal of Khmer Studies รวมทั้งในแคตตาลอกนิทรรศการต่าง ๆ อีกมากมาย และในเวทีวิจารณ์ศิลปะอีกหลายแห่ง

The Jim Thompson Art Center proudly to present the lecture about Image, Metaphor,Text: Approaches to Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia by Pamela Corey on 24 June 2016 at 14.00-16.00 pm. at Ayara Hall, soi Kasemsan 2, Rama1 Rd.,Pathumwan (BTS National Stadium) Free Admission

While exhibitions have been important building blocks in structuring a narrative of "Contemporary Southeast Asian Art," they have also had the effect of rendering the regional formation more problematic. Because the original ASEAN nations have been seen as the drivers of artistic development according to this exhibition history, the place of such countries as Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar have remained ambiguous, often isolated as trajectories independent of broader regional developments. This talk considers alternative regional conceptions in two parts. The first part draws from her essay "Metaphor as Method: Curating Regionalism in Mainland Southeast Asia," in which she discuss how geo-historical metaphors, such as the Mekong and the Ho Chi Minh Trail, were used - often problematically - to construct curatorial rationales for cultural coherence across borders. The second part of the talk considers the formal and conceptual dimensions of image and text in contemporary artworks to consider how object-based "readings" may provide another way of thinking about contemporaneity in the region.

About Lecturer
Pamela Nguyen Corey is a historian of modern and contemporary art with area expertise in Southeast Asia. In 2015 she received her PhD (History of Art) from Cornell University and subsequently took up post as Lecturer in South East Asian Art at SOAS, University of London. Her current book project examines the relationship between contemporary art and urban form in Vietnam and Cambodia, and is drawn from her doctoral dissertation research, which was supported by fellowships from Fulbright-Hays and the Center for Khmer Studies. She has co-organized international conferences at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art (Vietnamese Ceramics: Objects at the Crossroads, 2015) and MoMA (Contemporary Art in Cambodia: A Historical Inquiry, 2013). Her writings appear in Art Journal, Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art, Udaya, Journal of Khmer Studies, as well as in numerous exhibition catalogues and platforms for art criticism.
