การบรรยายในครั้งนี้เกี่ยวเนื่องกับนิทรรศการ TRANSMISSION โดยมีภัณฑารักษ์ David Teh กล่าวแนะนำศิลปิน 
โดยจะดำเนินรายการเป็นภาษาอังกฤษพร้อมแปลสรุปภาษาไทย

โสเพียพ พิช หนึ่งในศิลปินแนวหน้าจากภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้  โสเพียพทำงานในสตูดิโอของเขาที่เมืองพนมเปญ ด้วยการใช้วัสดุเรียบง่ายที่มีอยู่ในพื้นถิ่น โสเพียพถือได้ว่าเป็นคลื่นลูกใหม่ของศิลปินร่วมสมัยจากประเทศกัมพูชาที่ก้าวไปสู่เวทีในระดับโลก ผลงานของเขาปรากฏอยู่ในพื้นที่ของสถาบันศิลปะที่มีชื่อเสียงชั้นนำของโลก อย่าง Documenta ประเทศเยอรมนี Metropolitan Museum of Art นครนิวยอร์กและ Asia-Pacific Triennial ประเทศออสเตรเลีย

ในขณะที่ผลงานของโสเพียพอาจจะเป็นที่คุ้นเคยของผู้ติดตามงานศิลปะในกรุงเทพ จากการแสดงผลงานอย่างต่อเนื่องตั้งแต่ปีพ.ศ. 2550 การเสวนาในครั้งนี้โสเพียพจะเล่าถึงพัฒนาการและการเปลี่ยนแปลงของผลงานและกระบวนการสร้างงานในช่วงระยะเวลาที่ผ่านมา รวมถึงผลงานและโครงการขนาดใหญ่ที่จัดแสดงในสถาบันศิลปะต่างๆ

สำหรับนิทรรศการTRANSMISSION ศิลปินได้สร้างผลงานอันน่าทึ่งขึ้นใหม่จำนวน 2 ชิ้น ที่ทำให้เราเห็นการหวนกลับสู่ทักษะด้านการวาดภาพของศิลปิน เมื่อมองจากระยะไกลผลงานจิตรกรรมรูปทรงตารางของเขา เต็มไปด้วยความสมบูรณ์ และเส้นสายที่เรียบนิ่งแต่การสังเกตในระยะใกล้ เผยให้เราเห็นความซับซ้อนของโอกาสและความบังเอิญ และพื้นผิวที่เป็นธรรมชาติ ด้วยการผสมผสานอันเข้มข้นของวัสดุอย่างหวายไม้ไผ่ ขี้ผึ้ง และผ้ากระสอบ

ผลงานของโสเพียพ ปลุกให้เห็นถึงแรงตึงระหว่างความเป็นธรรมชาติและความมีวัฒนธรรม ระหว่างการเติบโตแบบสิ่งมีชีวิต และการแพร่ขยายอย่างไร้ขีดจำกัดของความเป็นสมัยใหม่ การบรรยายในครั้งนี้จะเผยให้รู้ว่าการผูกสัมพันธ์อย่างแนบแน่นกับวัสดุในท้องถิ่นของศิลปิน สะท้อนให้เห็นภาวะความร่วมสมัยของประเทศกัมพูชาในปัจจุบันซึ่งเป็นพื้นที่ในการสร้างงานของศิลปินได้อย่างไร 

เกี่ยวกับผู้บรรยาย: โสเพียพ พิช
โสเพียพ พิช เกิดเมื่อปีพ.ศ.2514 เมืองพระตะบอง ประเทศกัมพูชา ปัจจุบันอาศัยและทำงานอยู่ที่กรุงพนมเปญ ประเทศกัมพูชา โสเพียพจบการ ศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรี สาขาจิตรกรรม จาก University of Massachusetts ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา เมื่อปีพ.ศ.2538 และระดับ ปริญญาโทในสาขาเดียวกันจาก The School of the Art Institute of Chicago เมื่อปีพ.ศ.2542 โสเพียพมักทำงานกับวัสดุ อย่างเช่น หวาย และไม้ไผ่ โดยผลงานประติมากรรมในช่วงแรกของการทำงาน (พ.ศ.2547 - พ.ศ.2553) จะพูดถึงประเด็นเรื่องของเวลา ความทรงจำ และร่างกาย ซึ่งโดยส่วนใหญ่จะเชื่อมโยงกับเรื่องราวทางประวัติศาสตร์ของประเทศกัมพูชา โดยเฉพาะความทรงจำ ในวัยเด็กของตัวศิลปินในช่วงยุคเขมรแดงเรื่องอำนาจ (พ.ศ.2518 - พ.ศ.2522) และเรื่องราวทางวัฒนธรรม ทั้งประเพณีดั้งเดิม และการต่อสู้ดิ้นรนในประวัติศาสตร์ร่วมสมัย จากผลงานชุดล่าสุด “wall relief” (พ.ศ.2554 - ) โสเพียพได้ผันตัวเองจากการ อ้างอิงเรื่องของสังคมการเมือง มาสู่การทำงานกับวัสดุธรรมชาติพื้นถิ่นของประเทศกัมพูชา อย่างไม้ไผ่ หวาย ผ้ากระสอบ ขี้ผึง และผงสีจากพื้นดิน ซึ่งทำให้โสเพียพหันกลับมาทำงานที่เน้นทักษะของตัวเอง รวมถึงพูดถึงเรื่องของตัววัสดุมากขึ้นด้วย โสเพียพแสดงผลงานมากมายในระดับนานาชาติ โดยมีการแสดงผลงานเดี่ยวคือ “A Room”, The Indianapolis Museum of Art (พ.ศ.2557) ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา “Compound”, the Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington, Seattle (พ.ศ.2554) ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา “Cambodian Rattan: The Sculptures of Sopheap Pich”, The Metropolitan Museum, NYC (พ.ศ.2556) ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา และการแสดงผลงานเดี่ยว “Reliefs” จัดแสดงที่ Tyler Rollins Fine Art (พ.ศ.2556) ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา นอกจากนี้โสเพียพยังเข้าร่วมแสดงในนิทรรศการกลุ่มอีกมากมาย อาทิเช่น นิทรรศการศิลปะ DOCUMENTA ครั้งที่ 13 (พ.ศ.2555) ประเทศเยอรมัน เทศกาลศิลปะ Singapore Biennale (พ.ศ.2554) เทศกาลศิลปะ Asian Art Biennale in Taiwan (พ.ศ.2554) เทศกาลศิลปะ Fukuoka Triennale (พ.ศ.2552) ประเทศญี่ปุ่น และเทศกาลศิลปะ The Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (พ.ศ.2552) ที่เมืองBrisbane ประเทศออสเตรเลีย

The Jim Thompson Art Center presents an Artist Talk by Sopheap Pich 
Friday 19th September 2014 at 6.30-8.00 p.m.
At the Jim Thompson Art Center, Soi Kasemsan 2, Rama 1 Rd., Pathumwan (BTS National Stadium)

This artist's talk is a special program held in conjunction with the Art Center's current TRANSMISSION exhibition. The artist will be introduced by curator, David Teh. The talk will be held in English with a brief Thai translation.

Sopheap Pich is one of Southeast Asia's foremost artists. Working with modest, local materials in his Phnom Penh studio, the artist has led a new wave of Cambodian contemporary artists onto the global stage, appearing on some of the world's most prestigious institutional platforms including Documenta in Germany, New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Asia-Pacific Triennial in Australia.

While his work is familiar to Bangkok audiences, having been shown here regularly since 2007, in this talk Sopheap will look back on its development over the years and his larger institutional projects further afield. 

For TRANSMISSION, the artist made two stunning new works that mark a recent, painterly turn in his practice. From a distance, his 'grid paintings' suggest stability and order, but closer inspection reveals a complex of chance and organic textures, in a rich interplay of materials including rattan, bamboo, wax and burlap. 

Sopheap’s works evoke the epic tension between nature and culture, between organic growth and the limitless expansion of the modern. This talk will reveal how his intimate engagement with materials reflects the contemporary Cambodian situation in which he works.

About Artist: Sopheap Pich
Sopheap Pich was born in 1971 in Battambang province, Cambodia, Sopheap Pich lives and works in Phnom Penh. He holds a BFA in Painting from the University of Massachusetts (1995) and an MFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1999). Working primarily with rattan and bamboo, Pich’s early sculptural works (2004 – 2010)     addressed issues of time, memory, and the body, often relating to Cambodia’s history, particularly with regard to his childhood recollections of life during the Khmer Rouge period (1975-79), and its culture, both its ancient traditions and contemporary struggles. In his recent wall relief works (2011 – ) Pich departs from the burden of socio-political            references. Working with materials indigenous to Cambodia – bamboo, rattan, burlap, beeswax and earth pigments – Pich turns inwards towards his practice itself, its materiality and formal references. Select solo exhibitions include A Room, at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (2014), Compound at the Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington, Seattle (2011), Cambodian Rattan: The Sculptures of Sopheap Pich, The Metropolitan Museum, NYC (2013) and his fourth solo exhibition with Tyler Rollins Fine Art (2013). Select group exhibitions include: dOCUMENTA 13 (2012), Singapore       Biennale (2011), Asian Art Biennale in Taiwan (2011), Fukuoka Triennale (2009) and the Asia-Pacific Triennial (2009).
